Societe Jersiaise History section trip to southern Brittany

Gate of St Vincent
"Corbeau des Mers"
Boat's history

Every year the History section has a trip to France, this year it was to the area around Carnac and Vannes, the tour was again expertly guided by Professor Merion Jones of Reading University. We were also fortunate enough to have been guided by several local historians.

Vannes

The name of the town originates from a tribe of daredevil Gaulish sailors, the Veneti, who ruled the seas around here until the 1st century BC

General Louis Lazare Hoche 1768 - 1797

"Hoche showed himself equal to the crisis and inflicted a crushing blow on the Royalist cause by defeating and capturing de Sombreuil's expedition at Quiberon and Penthièvre (16 - 21 July 1795). Thereafter, by means of mobile columns (which he kept under good discipline) he succeeded before the summer of 1796 in pacifying the whole of the west.

These prints were made around the same time as P.J. Ouless published a book on Les Ecrehous in 1884 which is online at:

Grey Seals of Les Ecrehous

View all 6 photos...
I did observe the seal with net at the start of my holidays but not in the last week. I observed from 1 to 7 seals in a day, observing more on the neap tides, this may be due to less disturbance as most visiting boats come from tidal ports and spring tides are ideal for day trippers.

Cheers Nick
