Seymour Tower, S.E. Jersey

"P" for the Payn family
Seymour Tower
Seymour aka L'Avarison
View all 11 photos...
Bright and very breezy day, Seymour Tower - original tower is said to have been built around 1540 and named after Sir Edward Seymour the then Governor of the Island or after Sir Henry Seymour Conway who inspected the local defences after 1779. The present structure was built about 1782.

The tide here recedes over a mile exposing a vast expanse of rock and sand, the unique area is a vast attraction for a variety of waders and marine life some of which is found no where else in the British Isles.

Today there was an abundance of seahares (a small slug like creature, which squirts out purple dye as a defence mechanism), and green balls of worm egg masses which appear to have arrived this week.

In 1747 a judgement by the Royal Court confirmed the rights of the Payn family of Le Manoir de la Malletière for fishing and vraicking (seaweed collecting) within a given area near La Varison and the boundaries of the area were marked with an engraved â??Pâ?? 5 of these marks can still be seen today, the first one you come to is at Le Passage des Chaux Sablons, then at Little Seymour there are two, then to the SE Le Nez Courant, and the last to the east of Seymour Tower itself at Les Settes Samson, The final and sixth â??Pâ?? has not been found as is thought to have been lost when the Tower was re built. One of the engraved "P"s is in the first picture

The ormer could be said to be a national emblem for Channel Islands, its flesh is highly prized and makes a wonderful stew or they can be fried after it has been tenderized by being bashed . It is similar though smaller than abalones.

In the 19th century 10 to 30 tons would pass through the market in a tide, the shells were exported and used for inlay in furniture.

Hi,I;m a very proud Jersey Bean, taken away from my island home by good intentioned ,badly misguided parents in 1963,I was born at the General hospital in 1951 and my father was a serving policeman,I went to De La Salle and lived at Clubely estate I have been lucky enough too return to this little paradise on earth in 1976,1996,2004,and 2007.I have a few relatives still there but I regret that I will not ever be able to visit for a long stay as the cost of everything is way over the top, still ,thats life,I guess,Regards Keith The Abalone photos are great,we get big ones in Australia, but not as good as the Ormer Fri 8-Aug-2008 10:50
