Sunday Telegraph article on Jersey

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/main.jhtml?xml=/travel/2006/08/30/etjersey.xml

More mystery stones here, Father Burdo wrote an article on them in the Bulletin of the Societe Jersiaise, the stone is from the south coast similar to those used in the dolmen at La Hougue Bie.
Are they the remains of a long lost Dolmen?

Picture 2 shows on of the stones, it is blue where as nearby stone is "pudding" conglomerate

These stones have puzzled me since I was a young boy, I reported them to the Archaeology section of the Societe Jersiaise who inspected them on the last spring tide and deduced that they were not prehistoric.

My latetest guess is that they are an elaborate trap to catch sand eels.

One suggestion is that it may have been used to trap vraic (seaweed)

There is an open circle at the bottom and a rectangle above this.

Bottlenose dolphins off Gorey

Bottlenose dolphins off Gorey
Jersey has the most southerly and probably the largest group (pod) of Bottlenose dolphins in the British Isles.

Sunday 11th off Gorey a large pod were heading south, there were several juveniles which was very encouraging to see. Currently there is no public record of marine mammals in Jersey..

Some excellent shots of Jersey dolphins by Michael are at

Thanks for the link there!
I'd have to agree - there are loads of dolphins around the island seemingly at any time of the year, and the population looks like it's growing too

9 - 14th June

"Biesiada" Traditional Polish Fair in the Royal Square Saturday 10th June.

I have been researching Polish people who previously lived in Jersey:

Zeno Swietoslawski was born in Warsaw and was active through printing during his time in Jersey, there is an article of his works in the Bulletin of the Societe Jersiaise.

On the 1851 census
Dorset Street
Zeno B 39
Julia G born Devon 29 his wife?
Raphael T 6 - Jersey
Adolphus J 4 - Jersey
Francis A 2 - Jersey
Julien E 9m - Jersey

1871 Julia and Zeno (59) are still here with grandchildren

1881 in Liverpool we have Vessel:"Ullock"
Master Alexander SWIETOSLAWSKI age 44 and married

1n 1901 we have Francis and I presume his family.

It's a longish character profile from a whole collection profiles about Polish insurgents and revolutionaries. He was the son of an apparently fairly wealthy noble originally from Ukraine. He started his peregrinations in the early 1830s presumably after the so-called Novemeber Uprising (1830-1) and was for a time in London, writing letters to his father complaining about his poverty. Daddy kept on sending him money. He ended up in Jersey and reported to his father that Jersey produced a lot of eggs. His father deduced from this that wheat or rye must also be grown and asked about the local serfs and if there was a large Jewish community in Jersey. (There are a lot of such comments about cultural differences, e.g. son complaining he had to eat oysters in London, whereas in Warsaw they were then considered a delecacy.) He first wanted his son to buy land, but eventually he gave him money to buy a printing press. He was very religious and deeply committed to his socialist cause, so was his wife. His political pamphlets, however, were not popular among other activists. The author Teodor Tomasz Jepary met the couple some time in the 1850s IIRC and said everything was pretty neglected and run down in their house because they were both so engaged in the cause. They helped other insurgents including the author I think (later fought in the January uprising) get passports to France. This was a whole network or cells of Polish insurgents, revolutionaries, socialists, anarchist and religious zealots. Zenon's cell? commune? (gmina) was called Humañ (a town in Ukraine and site of 1768 massacre of Polish nobles and Jews). Like pretty much everything else in this Polish religious noble socialist's life, the commune or cell was bit of a failure, at least that's the author's opinion. He says that Zenon was thoroughly decent man committed to the cause (whatever that was), but hadn't really achieved much.

Joachim Lelewel was a fellow well known insurgent, but he didn't live in Jersey.

Thanks to Jozef for the above translation.

I have just read this item with particular interest, though I have no idea when it was placed here. I am a direct descendant of Zeno Swietoslawski. My great grandfather changed the family name to Ward because he believed the name to be cursed. I have a rudimentary handwritten family tree that begins with Zeno and his wife Julia Ward!
I possess a few other items relating to the family eg old photographs but have never researched the history as perhaps I should have. The American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Articles in the USA, hold a 22 page article written by Peter Brock called Zeno Swietoslawski, A Polish Forerunner of the Narodniki*. This costs
$10, payable by credit card, and they send it almost immediately as a PDF file onto your computer. I have also recently sent for a copy of Exiles from European Revolutions : Refugees in Mid-Victorian England by Sabine
Freitag. This is a quite expensive book but contains several mentions of Zeno Swietoslawski. Further, there is an extract from the Bulletin of the Societe Jersaise of 1954, Vol XVI, Part II, pages 179-194 by the historian(?) Peter Brock called A Polish "Proscrit" In Jersey. This also refers to Zeno Swietoslawski. My father had a copy of this but
it has since been lost. I would very much like to obtain a copy of this booklet but am uncertain how to. My son's wife has recently given birth to my first grandson and this has re-awakened an interest in the family history.

I have just read this item and was most interested, as I am a direct descendant of Zenon Swietoslawski. I have been to Jersey and seen his grave in green street cemetery, also went to the museum and saw writings and photo of Zeno which I had copied. I also have a copy of " A Polish "Proscrit" In Jersey" by Peter Brock.
Zeno's descendants took on the surnames Banks and Ward once he died.
Would love to hear from any other descendants.

I am also a direct descendant of Zenon Swietoslawski. The family name Banks was taken through marriage 4 generations ago when Alexander Swietoslawski married Elizabeth Jane Banks in 1859. I have many documents including a copy of both Peter Brock's articles mentioned above. There are others I would be more than happy to share with you, Pam and Ron, as well as anyone else in the family. I also have copies of birth, marriage and death certificates obtained through the Family Records Office in London. I have visited the 3 villages in Poland that were owned by the family prior to Zenon's emigration and seen the ancestral home. I have many photos of this trip. I am happy to share these as well if they are of interest.
I have not yet visited Jersey, nor do I have a photograph of Zenon, which I would dearly love to have.
Best wishes and thank you Jersey Views for allowing me to make these invaluable connections.

Legend has it that a dragon lived in the marshes of St. Lawrence, tormenting the Jersey people. Lord of Hambye in Normandy is said to have slain the beast. He was later murdered by his servant, and Lady Hambye built the mound in memory of the Lord, and within sight of Normandy. There is a theory that the dragon refers to Norse invaders who had control of half of the Island with Dannemarche in St Lawrence being the border or Danes - mark .
